Ely City kicked off their Thurlow Nunn Premier Division campaign in style on Tuesday evening, producing a disciplined and professional away performance to secure a deserved 2-0 victory over Wisbech Town.

The opening exchanges were evenly contested as both sides looked to settle into the new league season. Wisbech threatened on 16 minutes when ex Robin Harley Murkin found space behind the Ely defence, but a heavy touch allowed the Robins to recover and clear the danger before a meaningful effort could materialise.

As the half progressed, Ely gradually began to take control of possession, with stand in captain Charlie Root dictating the tempo from midfield. His range of passing became increasingly influential, twice threading intelligent balls towards Sam Townshend, who looked to exploit the space behind the Wisbech back line.

Luke Brown was at the heart of Ely's attacking play as the interval approached. On 40 minutes, Sam Tagg slipped a clever pass into Brown, whose strike was brilliantly blocked, earning the Robins a corner. Just two minutes later, Brown turned provider, delivering an inviting pass for Root, whose curling effort forced the Wisbech goalkeeper into action.

The hosts' frustrations began to show just before half-time when a Wisbech defender was booked after hauling back Tagg as he looked to break clear.

Despite the score remaining goalless at the interval, finished the stronger of the two sides. Both defences had stood firm throughout the opening 45 minutes, but the Robins had begun to move the ball with greater confidence and looked the more likely to find the breakthrough.

That momentum continued immediately after the restart. Brown, Tagg and Root all threatened within the opening minutes of the second period as Ely pinned the hosts back and finally found the breakthrough on 55 minutes.

Tagg showed excellent vision to spot the run of Root, sliding a perfectly weighted pass through the Wisbech defence. The Ely skipper surged beyond his marker before unleashing a powerful finish that gave the goalkeeper no chance.

With confidence flowing, Ely doubled their advantage just minutes later. Another incisive through ball released Brown, who showed great composure to lift the ball over the advancing goalkeeper. Although the keeper managed to get a hand to the effort, he could only help it into the net as the Robins established a commanding 2-0 lead.

Wisbech attempted to force a late response and finally began to create opportunities, but goalkeeper Ben Newton ensured Ely's clean sheet remained intact. First, he reacted superbly to claw away a dangerous effort from a Wisbech corner before producing another outstanding low save to his left to deny a powerful close-range header in the closing minutes.

It was a fitting end to an assured away performance from the Robins. Ely defensively organised having to be patient throughout before showing their attacking quality after the break. Root controlled the pace of the game from midfield, Tagg's creativity proved decisive, Brown was a constant threat in attack, and Newton's late heroics ensured the score line reflected a thoroughly professional evening's work.
