Ely City Reserves were forced to settle for a point on the road after a scrappy, hard-fought stalemate against Hardwick in difficult conditions. The game never truly found a rhythm, with a strong wind and frequent stoppages disrupting play throughout. Despite flashes of quality from both sides, neither could find the decisive breakthrough in what was ultimately a frustrating afternoon.
Ely started brightly and thought they had tested the goalkeeper early on, only for the referee to pull play back for a foul in the build-up. At the other end, Hardwick came closest in the opening stages when a looping header from a corner struck the crossbar, with Jamie Baxter on hand to clear the danger.
The Robins responded well, and Josh Townshend showed good movement to get in behind, but his effort was smartly saved at the near post. Moments later, the game swung end-to-end, with Hardwick threatening on the counter before Conor Loker produced an excellent last-ditch challenge to deny a clear opportunity.
As the half wore on, the contest became increasingly scrappy, with niggling fouls and interruptions preventing either side from building sustained pressure. Hardwick enjoyed a strong spell before the break, but Joey Murfitt stood firm, making two important saves to keep the scores level. Ely nearly snatched the lead just before half-time when Sam Townshend beat two defenders and drilled a dangerous ball across the six-yard box, but no one in red could apply the finishing touch.
HT: Hardwick 0-0 Ely City Reserves
The second half saw Ely make better use of the conditions, with the wind at their backs helping them play higher up the pitch. They began to apply more pressure, and a nervy moment from the Hardwick goalkeeper - who spilled a routine ball behind for a corner nearly undid the home sides solid defending.
The closest Ely came arrived in the 70th minute. From a well-delivered corner, Baxter flicked the ball goalward, Charlie Tunnell struck on the follow-up, only to see his effort dramatically cleared off the line by a recovering defender.
Controversy followed with ten minutes remaining when Ely appealed for a penalty after the ball appeared to strike a Hardwick hand in the box. Play continued, and moments later Hardwick broke quickly, leading to a clumsy challenge from Brett Wyman that resulted in a free kick and a yellow card, much to the frustration of the visitors wo saw him as last man, despite the attacker going away from goal.
Ely continued to push for a winner late on, with Loker nearly producing a moment of brilliance, his powerful 25-yard strike tipped over by the Hardwick keeper. At the other end, Murfitt ensured Ely held on for the clean sheet with a brilliant full-stretch save deep into stoppage time.
In truth, it was a game lacking in quality and fluency, but Ely will take positives from a solid defensive display and a point on the road.
