After last week’s win at Burwell, Ely looked to push for another 3 points as Cambridge Rangers Reserves visited the Demcom.
As City have done in previous weeks, the early press and dominance brought an opening goal in the first 3 minutes.
A quick piece of play found Beth Horsfield, who delivered a pinpoint cross to find Kel Docwra unmarked to guide home.
The lead was doubled on 8, as Amy Lloyd slide in Danni Youngs who nipped between two defenders, slotting under the dive of the Rangers keeper.
Cambridge seemed to wake up from the early set back and after going close with a long range effort, found themselves in behind Ely’s left back area and a cross found their centre forward, who cut back on Kerry Dyer and curled a shot that was saved by the diving Tiff Toynton.
On 20 minutes, Ely added 3rd, Tash Lane picking the ball up inside the opposition half, her clever ball finding Horsfield again out wide, her cross was glanced home by Youngs for her 2nd of the game. A minute later, it was 4 when Toynton’s long clearance eluded the centre half and Docwra beat the keeper to the ball and placed home for her double.
Cambridge tried to get one back instantly, indecisiveness from Ely saw the ball loose on the edge of the box, but eventually being cleared.
Lou Harwood went close from a header, that she’ll feel she should have done better with before Ely added a 5th from Horsfield after great work from Erin Chandler, Docwra cut back for an easy tap in for Beth.
On the half hour, Ely did get sloppy at the back again, as Christine Cullen was caught inside, the Rangers winger took aim across Toynton; who could only parry the effort into the path of the forward who tapped home for 5-1.
6 minutes later, Youngs extended the gap again, as she grabbed her hatrick after Docwra drove in from the byline cutting back. Her fourth came 2 minutes later through her own work, turning inside and out and cooly placing into the far corner.
Rangers again pulled a goal back, Ely causing their own problems as left the centre forward unmarked through in front of goal to tuck away past Toynton.
Just on the stroke of half time, the Robins made it 8 as Docwra and Horsfield played a one two inside, Kelly collecting the ball back, sitting the Keeper down easily rolling the ball home.
Half time; ECW 8-2 CRR
5 minutes into the second half, clearance from half time sub Vic Bailey found Docwra in on goal and after her initial shot was saved by the keeper, she tapped home the rebound. Lane then instantly nearly grabbed her own effort a minute later, the keeper parrying for a corner.
56 minutes and Youngs was again on the scoresheet for Ely’s 10th, her 5th from another Docwra cross.
Ely’s back line withstood another surge from Rangers, as Kaci Gibson and then Cooper cleared under pressure. Gibson and Lane then combined to put Poppy Green through but a last gasp tackle denied her and then Bek Finch soon after.
Substitutions for both sides made the game bitty as tired legs from the extreme tempo set though the game started to show.
Rangers keeper produced another two saves from Docwra and Youngs, up the other end Toynton made a smart save for City.
In the closing minutes there was still time for Player of the Match Youngs to grab her double hatrick of 6 and Ely’s 11th, as she found herself free after Chandler and and Green combined, firing off the underside of the bar. A magnificent individual coup whose work rate in previous games hadn’t been rewarded with a goal.
Final whistle and Ely win 11-2, impressive again from the Women, it wasn’t perfect but was persistent attacking wise.
They’ll want to tidy up their dominance for the challenges coming up but another 3 points for the league campaign.
