Hard Fought Win For Robins Women In Promotion Push

Hard Fought Win For Robins Women In Promotion Push

Ely City Football Club14 Apr - 11:32

Docwra & Green score to give Ely City Women the win in a hard fought game at Girton to keep their promotion push alive.

City made a couple of changes, as Kaci Gibson and Erin Chandler came into the side, Lou Harwood returned too after a car accident kept her out of last week’s win over Soham.
Ely, as commonly done this season, started quickly and took the lead inside 2 minutes. Tash Lane pressed incepting a ball out and she rolled in Docwra who weaved her way into the box and placed past the Rangers keeper. Lane continued to pull the strings, working with Youngs and Green, Green blasting her shot at the keeper who could only parry, before collecting on the line before it crept over.
Ely’s aggressive press again had Lane play in Chandler, she drove in and hit a cross cum shot into the box but failed to find an Ely player arriving. Ely’s work down the left side was cutting through Rangers, as Gibson’s long throw found Youngs, who turned her marker and played Docwra again, but she failed to hit the target. Cambridge did have a chance on goal, as they had a throw find their forward who shot straight at Tiff Toynton in the Ely goal. The Robins could and should have added a second, but in strange circumstances Green managed to clear a goal bound effort off the line from Docwra’s free kick after the keeper had palmed it onto the back of her head. Cambridge did get in behind as they broke directly, but Gibson tracked back and Cooper cleared before any danger to Toynton.
On the stroke of half time, Docwra had another effort on goal but the keeper saved well with her feet.
Into the second half and with the wind and sun now behind them, Ely pressed early. Sub Amy Lloyd combined well with Lane on the left, who then linked with Harwood and Green. Lane was played in and her cross was just cleared off the feet of Youngs. On 55 minutes, the Robins doubled their lead and put daylight on the scoreline. Docwra dropped deep in the midfield before lifting a ball over the top, Green out muscled the off balance defender and smashed home for 2-0.
Cambridge had a chance to fire back one, after Cooper was adjudged to have fouled her player, but the free kick 25 yards out was comfortable into Toynton’s hands.
Ely made several substitutions to freshen the legs which slightly affected their balance, just as Rangers themselves had a good spell. The ball in behind sub Bailey who pushed wide. The ball was crossed, but Dyer quickly removed any danger blocking the ball on the 6 yard box.
Ely had a couple of late chances, Youngs firing just wide and Docwra lobbed the Keeper from 30 yards, but was denied by her back peddling save. Sub Christina King also played a lovely ball inside to Lloyd, who found Isabelle Pillow, she laid off to Docwra but she put over as the ref blew for full time.

A solid 2-0 win for the Robins, hard work all over the pitch in a dominating display. Sometimes a lack of momentum on a difficult pitch, but a professional away performance continues the promotion push with 3 points.
