Ely City FC suffered a frustrating home defeat as clinical finishing from Haverhill Rovers saw the visitors claim a 2-0 victory despite the Robins creating the better chances for large periods of the contest.

Ely began brightly and immediately looked threatening going forward. Inside three minutes, Aaron Hamer’s excellent ball over the top released Alex Kerr in behind the defence, who squared neatly for Friend, but Haverhill goalkeeper Archer reacted quickly to smother the effort.

The Robins continued to apply early pressure. Hamer was again involved on seven minutes, delivering a deep cross to the back post where James Moore arrived, but his header drifted narrowly wide. Shortly afterwards, a slick passing move saw Charlie Sutcliffe pick out Moore on the right. His driven cross-shot flashed across the face of goal, but Jack Friend was unable to make a clean connection and Archer saved on the line.

Haverhill responded with a spell of pressure midway through the half. Robins stopper Ben Newton was called into action with an excellent diving claim from a long-range strike, before confidently dealing with a series of corners, punching clear under pressure and then claiming the second delivery.

Ely soon regained their rhythm and produced one of the best moves of the half on 25 minutes. Friend turned brilliantly on the halfway line and released Moore through the middle. The move was worked wide before being cut back into the box where Moore dummied cleverly, allowing Alex Brown to arrive and strike powerfully, but once again Archer denied the Robins.

The hosts continued to threaten. Friend drove forward through the channel but dragged his shot wide before producing a superb turn and pass that split the Haverhill defence, only for a covering defender to intervene as Moore looked poised to break clear.

Haverhill almost stole the lead before the break when their winger twisted inside and delivered a looping cross that dropped onto the top of the crossbar. Ely responded moments later with another excellent chance as Joe Tarpey reached the byline and lifted a brilliant cross towards Friend, but a defender did just enough to take it away before he could head home.

Despite Ely’s strong first-half performance, the sides went into the break level at 0-0.

The Robins began the second half positively, with Kerr causing problems down the right and firing a dangerous cross-shot into the side netting. At the back, Ely had been solid throughout, with Alfie Rogers and Jacob Partridge strong defensively and Josh Collins particularly impressive both on the ground and in the air.

However, the game turned on 56 minutes. A loose ball from Ely allowed a Haverhill forward to break through on goal – appearing marginally offside – before blasting his shot over Newton, who got hands to the effort but could not keep it out.

The goal shifted momentum and just ten minutes later the visitors doubled their lead. A neat exchange of passes inside the Ely box allowed the striker to slip through and finish beyond Newton to make it 2–0.

Ely pushed hard to respond. Moore nearly pulled one back immediately as a quick press created a chance in a crowded area, but the ball would not fall kindly. Soon after, another deep delivery looped to the back post where Friend stretched but could not divert his effort on target.

Changes followed as Leon Fulianty and Jev Cook replaced Brown and Sutcliffe, with Harry Biggs later coming on for the hard-working Friend and Finn Edwards replacing Moore for the closing minutes.

Despite throwing bodies forward in the final stages and winning a late corner, the Robins could not find a breakthrough as Haverhill managed the closing minutes effectively.
In truth, it was a game decided by finishing. Ely created enough chances in the first half to lead but were punished by two clinical moments after the break.
