Robins suffer defeat in New Year Fixture

The game had a lacklustre feel to it as both sides looked to kick-start their seasons early in the new year.

The home side started brightly and looked dangerous with both wingers causing problems. Few chances were created and the Robins looked to have seen out the early pressure and started to get a foot in the game.

Unfortunately, a dip in concentration saw a short free-kick taken in midfield, which saw a sliced clearance fall to the unmarked striker to score at the back post for the hosts.

To City's credit, this prompted a response and for the final 15 minutes of the half, were the better side with some really good football played.

Good work down the lift saw Mitchell Drewitt find the unmarked Finn Cater who went close with a superb strike from 25 yards.

The best move of the game saw Cater put Stephen Cleary clean through in the last minute of the half but his effort was blasted wide.

Half-time; 1-0

The opening stages of the second half were very even.

Newmarket were rarely threatened as Ely's ball in the attacking third often let them down.

However, the clearer chances fell to Newmarket who hit the post and saw a good save from Joe Deas.

Concentration for the Robins again lapsed and a low corner fro the Jockeys was well placed in to the far corner to double the lead.

Ely chased the game late on and were hit with a wind assisted third to end the contest.

Another harsh scoreline in what was a pretty even fixture. In terms of effort, the youth side cannot be faulted. There were passages of play where the side played some superb football, but were punished during lapses in concentration.
