The Robins' youth side were narrowly defeated in their last pre-season outing against a good Swaffham side.
It is fair to say that the first half was not the greatest in terms of quality. Ely started the game sluggishly but eventually worked themslves up to speed.
A missed penalty by Ben Harnwell, who saw his effort saved well failed to open the scoring after 10 minutes.
The first half was very much a midfield battle with Swaffham battling extremely well and pressured Ely in to mistakes in possession.
Swaffham broke the deadlock after 30 mins when they pounced on a loose pass, played in the centre forward who poked past the outcoming Ely goalkeeper.
Half-time; 0-1
The second half saw a number of changes.
Ely controlled possession from the outset and the bulk of the half was spent in Swaffham's half of the pitch.
The away keeper was excellent at claiming a number of crosses to prevent any danger.
The clearest chance fell to Owen Johnson who volleyed wide from a Ronnie Sulman cross after a great passing move.
Without creating many clear cut chances, Swaffham limited Ely to a number of efforts from distance which the keeper dealt with comfortably.
Full-time ; 0-1
A really good game which saw two evenly matched teams.
We wish Swaffham luck with their league season and the Ely side now look towards our first league fixture at home to Haverhill Rovers next Thursday (15th).
