Another Nine Goal Thriller at The Unwin

Managers Dave Beeton and Mark Leonard were pleased to get their season started let only take all three points, but that is what happened at The Unwin this evening.

Without regular keeper Jake Alsop out due to injury it was down to defender Carson Silvain to step in between the sticks.

Ely were out of the blocks the quickest and both forwards Luke Mansfield and Tom Thulborn had decent efforts on goal. Against the run of play Godmanchester took with a decent move down their left. Ely responded well and the Godmanchester keeper kept his side in front by stopping Tom Thulborn on two occasions the first by tipping a shot onto the post.

However in the 23rd minute Thulborn was put clear by a flick on by his partner Mansfield and this time he made no mistake to open his account for his new side. Rhys Mazey then hit the bar with a cross shot and then in the 31st minute the young Robins did edge in front . Tom Thulborn was causing the Rovers so many problems with his movement and pace and another attack led him being put through and the advancing keeper handled outside of the box. The referee gave the free kick, but no further action was taken on the young keeper.George Raynor stepped up and drilled a low hard free kick past the keeper right to put his side in front.

Levi Wraight was introduced and with his first touch he was put through one on one with the keeper, but just failed to put it away.

Half Time 2-1.

The second half started exactly as the first with Ely having good possession, but it was Godmanchester who struck first again with another well taken goal. Ely continued to create changes and a normally dependable Luke Mansfield failed with a one on one with the keeper , but he was involved in Ely's third when he combined well with Rhys Mazey who slotted it home.

Now in front again Ely carved the Rovers defence wide up again and although Luke Mansfield rounded the keeper he could not direct his shot on target from an awkward angle It was soon 4-2 in the 61st minute when a lovely cross by Alex Brown set up Harry Walker to send a half volley past the keeper. Luke Mansfield did get his goal three minutes later when another lovely through ball by Lewis Hook found Mansfield on the left and this time he made mistake. With fifteen minutes left it was 6-2 when Tom Thulborn scored a quality individual goal . The attacking was still not over and another Lewis Hook through ball found Mansfield again and this time he was up ended by the keeper and he received a caution from the official. Levi Wraight stepped up and although struck his shot well the keeper made a good save.

The last few minutes saw Rovers have most the possession and shots on goal and they still had time got another one back and hit the crossbar.

The game finished 6-3, but to be honest with you we probably could have had double that with the goal attempts both sides had
