2-1 defeat at Fakenham

Ely exited the league cup in the first round with a 2-1 defeat away at Fakenham Town.

There was a debut in goal for Marcus Brook and Nathan Littlefair returned to the starting line up having been out since pre-season through injury.

Fakenham are not having the best start to the season as they sit bottom of the Premier division and the confidence levels showed throughout most of the first half as Ely controlled the game and created a number of good chances to take the lead. Craig Neal, Ash Walter, James Seymour and Jack Saunders all could not beat the keeper when well positioned. Ely received a killer blow for not making their possession count and taking any of the chances created as Fakenham took the lead in the 45th minute with their striker heading in at the far post.

The second half started with Ely pushing and Alex Theobald had a chance from a Jamie Alsop corner cleared off the line. However Fakenham went up the other end and extended their lead when a striker had plenty of time in the box to pick his place and give Marcus in goal no chance. Ely were slightly subdued following this and the game looked out of reach until and excellent goal from Craig Neal on 65 minutes. Josh Sewell stepped out from centre back to break up the play and pass the ball over the top of the right back for Craig Neal to take one touch and then blast the ball into the bottom corner form the corner of the area. This gave Ely the lift that was needed but the equalising goal could not be found. A number of set pieces were put into the box as a number of fakenham players picked up yellow cards but no clear cut opportunities could be taken. Nathan Littlefair had an effort saved by the keeper and Jack Saunders had a shot well blocked aswell as having a shot go over the bar. Fakenham were looking dangerous on the break as Ely pushed for that elusive second goal that unfortunately never came.

So we fall at the first hurdle of the league cup but our attentions turn back to the league on Saturday when we entertain Needham Market Reserves at the Unwin Ground
