Ely City came into the game making three changes to the starting eleven on Saturday. In came Daniel Jeffrey,Dom Hunt and George Darling for Ollie Brookes,Tom Williams and Liam Griffin.
Both sides were at the wrong side of the table, but produced a fairly open game with lots of commitment and endeavor Godmanchester started the brightness in the opening minutes, but Ely to worked really hard at closing down the opposition and saw them take the lead when a quickly taken corner found Jame Alsop who delivered a left foot cross into the box and although Matty Simpson missed it on the first attempt the ball rebounded back across the six yard area and he slotted the ball home from close range.
Ely were at this stage well on top and Alex Theobald and Kelvin Enaro both had good long range efforts that the keeper had to deal with. The Robins needed to strike again while on top, but a mistake by captain James Seymour let in the away side. From a defending corner Seymour grabbed his opponent in the box and although the player went down easily the referee was in no doubt to award a penalty.
The penalty was converted and this put new belief in Rovers who started to get a foot hold in the game again. Ely still looked dangerous with the lively Kelvin Enaro and his cross shoot towards the end the end of the first half had the visiting keeper stretching to tip it over.
The second half started with Godmanchester being a little more purposeful and almost took the lead when a left sided shot hit the foot of the post and bounced away. Jamie Alsop on the left was getting forward and his blistering strike again from long distance just sailed over.
Individual mistakes have been the problem for The Robins this season and again Rovers second could have been avoided. Spencer Saberton gave an unnecessary free kick away on the Godmanchester right. The free kick was swung into the box and the same player unfortunately lost his forward and the ball was headed home to put the visitors surprisingly into the lead.
Unlike some previous games Ely believed they could get something from the game and Alex Theobald went close with a glancing header. It looked like Godmanchester were going to take all three points, but well into added time a Jamie Alsop throw in was aimed at James Seymour but the ball feel to the feet of Alex Theobald and with his back to goal turned and struck the ball past the helpless keeper.
It was no more than the home side deserved and even then at the final whistle the feeling was that this was a great opportunity lost in not taking all three points.
