Khalsa progressed to the quarter finals of the FA Vase with a 3-0 away win over Ely City.
Dominant throughout the whole ninety minutes, Khalsa men Craig Bannister, Dave Meese and Marvin Nesbitt all got their names on the score-sheet in the second half.
Both teams were quick off the blocks, pressing forward early on, but it wasn’t until the twenty-second minute that the game had its first big chance.
A slip from Ely’s Matthew Simpson let Khalsa full-back Tim Jackson break down the left flank, his cross met the head of Nisbett, and Robins goalkeeper Harry Reynolds just managed to parry the ball wide of the goal.
Seven minutes later, the Robins had their first break when Ashley Walter played in George Darling. After beating one defender, Khalsa’s Michael Perks brought down the forward in the penalty area, however referee Ian Rathbone did not award the spot-kick, much to the home crowd’s frustration.
It was Khalsa who finished the first half with all the chances, as Robins keeper Reynolds was on top form to deny both Meese and Perks before the break.
Just over ten minutes into the second half, Darling was again involved in the action for Ely. His pass saw Simpson through on goal with only keeper Tom Turner to beat, but an over hit touch guided the ball right into Turner’s gloves.
A couple of minutes after, the deadlock was broken. Khalsa had threatened down the flanks the entire game, but it took a moment of magic from Bannister in the centre of the park to put the visitors one goal ahead.
Given time and space, the forward struck the ball beautifully on the outside of his boot, leaving Reynolds hopeless due to the amount of bend on the strike which arrowed into the top left corner.
The away side doubled their lead just under ten minutes after their opener. Khalsa winger Luke Shearer chested down a long ball and flicked it past Ely’s Tom Williams, after breaking into the 18-yard box, the centre-half brought Shearer down and Rathbone pointed to the spot.
Meese stepped up to take the penalty kick, firing it into the top-left corner smashing off the underside of the crossbar in the process, Khalsa now seemed to be in cruise-control.
In an attempt to spark the life back into Ely, a double substitution saw Ashley Shipp and current top goal-scorer Alex Theobald came on, but with such little time remaining the pair struggled to make any real impact.
Walter’s over the top ball played Robins forward Sam Reed through on goal, but his delayed run gave time for Khalsa skipper Tesfa Robinson to get back and block Reed’s attempt on goal.
With just a couple minutes of normal time remaining, Khalsa killed the game off once and for all. Ely defenderr Ollie Brooks was caught out in the middle of the park, and Yusifu Ceesay who had been first class all game played a simple ball across the face of goal to give Nisbett a tap in.
The result put an end to Ely City’s historic cup run, and saw Sporting Khalsa move on to the last eight of the FA Vase.
