Opening Day Win on the Road for the Robins

Ely travelled for the season opener without the injured Alex Theobald and Micheal Harvey and the unavailable Luke Crisp, Josh Lowe and Sam Goodge. New signings Jordan Foster and Ryan Harnwell both made their league debuts for the club, while Under 18 midfielder Jordan Johnson was included in the squad.

After arriving late due to traffic and delayed kick off Ely started well with Matty Simpson heading straight at the keeper after a cross from Tom Williams. At the other end Williams made a good block to deny the hosts. Jordan Foster and Ryan Harnwell both had good chances on their debut and then the away fans thought their side had gone ahead when a Jamie Alsop found Steve Holder at the far post and although the ball crossed the line an eagle eyed assistant referee ruled it out for handball

The Robins did take the lead mid way through the half when experience striker Steve Holder gained possession off a defender and calmly finished.

Gorleston responded an a long range effort from 25 yards out saw the shot hit the post. The hosts did eventually draw level when a controversial penalty was given just before half time with the new handball rules coming into play.

HT 1-1

Gorleston started stronger second half , but Ely defended well and then did create a good chance with Harnwell going close, but the keeper saved well. Alex Batten then tried his luck with a good long range effort well, but was well saved.

The Robins then went back in front when a long throw from Alsop was flicked on by Walter and Adam Capel headed home from 6 yards. Central defender then blazed over from six yards out afterwards

Veteran Sam Reed came on for Jordan Foster while young Jordan Johnson was brought into the game for goalscorer Steve Holder

Ely defended well for the last ten minutes with Reynolds was not really tested in goal although Gorleston had all the possession

FT 1-2

Manager Brady Stone commented afterwards
'It was a fantastic away performance from start to finish especially after our players getting held up and arriving at 2-45pm. The opening game of season is always about getting off the mark and we did ,but also put in a performance to match .Now we have a free shot at home Tuesday night against one of the leagues favourites s. We have nothing to lose and all to gain'
