Victory away at Team Bury

Ely have climbed into the top 8 of the Thurlow Nunn First Division following victory away at Team Bury. Ely made 1 change to the team from Saturday’s game with Lewis Hook coming in to replace the unavailable Craig Neal, whilst Paul Summerskill returned to the squad. Sam Goodge is still injured and Ash Walter was serving the second of his 3 match suspension.

On an excellent playing surface Ely started well and had the majority of possession getting on top against the young Bury side. It was just the final ball that was lacking at times as Ely tried to open the scoring. Alex Knowles went close when one on one and Lewis hook was also denied by the Bury goalkeeper. Bury came into the game more as Ely began to overplay at times and lost possession on a number of occasions. Craig Galbraith had to make a good stop low to his right when a Bury attacker was allowed too much space in the box. Ely were looking dangerous at the other end from set pieces but the ball would not drop kindly for the away side. James Seymour had a good opportunity at the end of the first half but his header went over.

Ely came out second half and controlled the game playing with a good tempo and looking dangerous in possession. A long throw from the right was flicked on but Alex Theobald was unable to finish heading straight at the keeper. James Seymour then had a header cleared off the line. A dangerous ball from Jack Saunders then evaded everyone when it looked like it just needed a touch. The breakthrough came in the 55th minute when Alex Knowles received the ball on the edge of the box and managed to get the ball on to his right foot to fire home into the top corner for Ely to take the lead. The lead was extended in the 65th minute when Alex Theobald headed home from close range from Jack Saunders corner. Richard Gammon and Paul Summerkill were both brought on for the last 25 minutes and helped Ely to control the game. James Seymour went close again when through one on one from Richard Gammon’s flick on but the keeper saved. Ely closed the game out with Bury not relly having many chances apart from a couple of long range efforts. In the 89th minute a free kick form Jack Saunders was headed home by Paul Summerskill to make the final score 3-0.

A positive evening claiming 3 points away from home and keeping a clean sheet. Unfortunately our next game is now not until 19th September when we play at home to Haverhill Borough.
