Robins defeated at Yarmouth

Martin Grey29 Sep 2015 - 11:50

Defeat puts end to winning run

Ely went into this game in a positive mood having won the previous 3 league games but came away with nothing despite leading twice and probably deserving something from the game.

Ely had James Seymour, Ash Walter and Ed Richardson all back in the squad and took their places on the bench as those that performed well against Haverhill last week kept their places. Craig Galbraith returned in goal.

A bright start found us in front after only a minute as Sam Goodge picked out the in form Alex Knowles to finish. We continued to be on top in the early stages of the game but allowed Yarmouth to level after 17 minutes when Galbo could only palm a shot straight to the Yarmouth forward to tap in. It was not long until Ely were back in front when Alex Theobald twisted and turned in the Yarmouth box and managed to find the top corner with his shot. However Ely could not hold onto this lead for long as Galbo handled outside of the area and Yarmouth scored from the resulting free kick.

Ely went in at half time level not sure how they were not winning the game. Alex Theobald came off injured after being continuously fouled by the Yarmouth backline and Richard Gammon came on to replace him. The second half performance did not live up to the first and Yarmouth started well. Galbo saved from a volley but from the corner Yarmouth took the lead as the Ely keeper could only punch the ball against his own defender and into the net. The next 15 minutes was fairly scrappy with Ely failing to create chances and Yarmouth looking much more solid. James Seymour came on for Alex Knowles and a change of formation was implemented but Yarmouth gained a 4th goal on the break as Ely lost possession. A 5th goal from Yarmouth came with 5 minutes to play as Ely were pushing forward.

Full time and a 5-2 win for Yarmouth that may of slightly flattered the home side. Individual mistakes cost Ely in this fixture and it is a lesson to be learnt for the young robins when dominating periods of the game they need to remain defensively solid as Yarmouth demonstrated in the second half.
