A Little-fairy tale ending for the Robins

A Little-fairy tale ending for the Robins

Martin Grey21 Nov 2015 - 23:25

80th minute winner earns 3-2 victory

The Robins had to come from behind twice to keep up their winning run in the league making it four wins in a row with Nathan Littlefair getting his first goal for the club in his 38th appearance.

In cold and windy conditions Debenham took an early lead after 2 minutes when they scored direct from a free kick after Ely failed to clear their lines and James Seymour committed a foul on the edge of the box. Ely struggled to get into their stride with the 120 minutes on Wednesday looking to cause the players to be slightly sluggish with passes going astray. Craig Neal delivered a dangerous ball into the box but no one could get on the end of it and Liam Griffin had a shot blocked. However on 15 minutes Ely were level when Jamie Alsop played the ball into Alex Theobald who controlled well and turned his man before finishing comfortably. Ely were not level for long though as Debenham regained the lead when they won the ball back in the Ely half and the Debenham midfielder finished well from the edge of the box. This knocked the Ely players and frustration grew as Debenham were coping with the heavy pitch and conditions better. After 3 goals in the first 16 minutes the next 15 minutes were fairly scrappy. However before the end of the half both teams had chances. Ash Walter headed wide after a great ball into the box from Sam Goodge and Alex Theobald shot wide from a tight angle after rounding the keeper. In the dying minutes of the first half Ash Walter made a great block to deny a Debenham player from close range following a corner.

Ely came out second half looking to get back on level terms but it was Debenham that went closest to scoring when an attacking player shot wide of Harry Reynolds goal. Following this Ely began to up their tempo and Liam Griffin nearly equalised from a delicate chip only for the Debenham keeper to save. Ely made a double change with Lewis Hook and Nathan Littlefair coming on and this had an immediate impact. Spencer Saberton, who had moved to left back, pick out James Seymour who from 25 yards struck an unstoppable curling effort into the top right hand corner to make it 2-2 on 63 minutes.

It was now a game either side felt they could win. Debenham attacked the Ely defence and only a block from Nathan Littlefair stopped them from regaining the lead. Dan Jeffrey broke down the right for Ely but could not pick anyone out with his cross. In the 80th minute Ely won a corner and from Jamie Alsops delivery Ash Walter flicked on for Nathan Littlefair to head in, although with the best efforts of the keeper trying to claw the ball from behind the line the goal was rightly given. Ely had some good chances to extend their lead in the last 10 minutes as Debenham pressed for an equaliser. Alex Theobald shot wide from 6 yards, Lewis Hook was denied by the keeper when one on one and Sam Goodge could not get a shot away after breaking clear and rounding the keeper. Debenhams best chance of an equaliser came in the 93rd minute when an attacker got between Spencer Saberton and Harry Reynolds only for his touch to take the ball out of play.

Overall it was not the prettiest of games but was never going to be given the conditions. Ely battled well against a resolute Debenham side and managed to claim all 3 points and move 4 points clear in second place. Next up for the Robins is a league cup match on Tuesday night at home to Needham Market Reserves.
