3-3 draw for Robins

After taking the lead in the 90th minute it might seem like two points dropped but with a below par performance for much of the game it is more like a point gained.

We travelled to Diss with a full squad having Matty Simpson and Craig Galbraith available again after recovering from injuries. However we were without manager Brady Stone who was unavailable this weekend.

On a heavy pitch and playing into a strong wind first half Ely showed some encouraging signs in the opening ten minutes but after that were second best for much of the half with the Diss midfield winning the battle in the middle of the pitch. Ely created a couple of good chances in those opening 10 minutes with Sam Goodge having a shot blocked and a couple of dangerous balls being put into the box from Jamie Alsop and Craig Neal down the left hand side. Diss responded to the early pressure by going close on the counter attack shooting wide of the post. This followed a number of Diss corners and set pieces. Diss took the lead in the 25th minute when a long ball from the keeper was not dealt with by the Ely defence and one striker flicked on to the other striker to score. Diss remained on top and Ely could not respond as it was hard for the away side to keep possession of the ball and were often second to the loose balls. However Ely did manage to stop Diss from increasing their lead and nearly equalised on the stroke of half time only for a Diss defender to clear off the goal line.

In the second half Ely had the wind to their advantage but it was Diss who started the strongest again and went close when their striker broke through on the right hand side of the box but could not hit the target. The Ely team were frustrated by the pressure Diss were putting on them but managed to pull level on 60 minutes when a ball up to Alex Theobald was neatly flicked on for Sam Goodge to run onto a score confidently. The scores did not remain level for long though as Diss regained the lead on 67 mins when Ely lost possession in their own half and the Diss striker managed to break clear of the Ely defence and finish. The goal knocked the Ely players and at this stage there only looked like being one winner. However in the 80th minute Ely played their best bit of football of the game to equalise. Jamie Alsop knocked a cross field pass to Sam Goodge who intelligently headed down to Alex Theobald who was able to pick out Matty Simpson at the far post to finish past the keeper. At this stage a point was looking a good outcome but the possibility of all 3 came when Ely won a corner in the left hand corner a Jamie Alsop put a great ball in for James Seymour to head home much to the delight of the travelling Robins supporters. A fair amount of injury time was due as to be expected and in the last minute of stoppage time Diss won a corner and equalised to make it 3-3. The final whistle then shortly followed.

In reflection this was very much a point gained as Diss is not an easy place to visit and they made it hard for us to play. 3 points would have been a bonus but would have been harsh on the home side. Credit to our players for never giving up even when things were not going our way.
