Robins lose out to The Bloaters

2nd v 3rd in the Thurlow Nunn 1st Divison had a lot of hype around the game but unfortunately a gale force wind blowing across the Unwin Ground made the game a bit of a damp squid in terms of entertainment value.

Ely went into the game with a full squad to choose from having not had a game the previous Saturday. Alex Theobald came back into the starting line up following his ankle injury and Daniel Jeffrey past a pre-match fitness test. On a sticky pitch the game got under way and both teams looked to see how they could cope with the wind. From the outset it look as though both teams were set out determined not to lose the game. Sam Goodge got down the Ely left and crossed the ball but evaded Matty Simpson at the far post. Craig Neal got through 1 on 1 looking to be marginally offside but shot just wide of the post. A Yarmouth forward then got beyond the Ely defence but lifted his shot over Harry Reynolds and wide of the post. Yarmouth had a couple of corners but against the win was difficult to get them in the box. Harry Reynolds then made an excellent save as a Yarmouth forward got into the box to shoot. Both teams were battling well but ultimately the quality was lacking. HT 0-0

There was probably even less goal mouth action second half and the odds of a 0-0 result would of been favourable. Ely lost Matty Simpson to a hamstring injury after the restart. The decisive moment of the match came in the 75th minute when Yarmouth won a corner and as it swung in towards the goal it looked as though Harry Reynolds was impeded by a Yarmouth forward but the officials allowed the goal to stand. Ely introduced Luke Mansfield and Lewis Hook and went all out attack to try and salvage something from the game but could not create any clear cut opportunity and after a lot of stoppage time the game finish 1-0 to the visitors.

Not the result the home crowd were hoping for and Ely fell to third in the table. However there is still 14 games left to play for the Robins and promotion is very much in our own hands and we will look to bounce back on Tuesday night at home to Team Bury.
