Robins return to winning ways

Martin Grey20 Dec 2015 - 15:26

Hard fought 3 points

After 14 days since our defeat away to Woodbridge we returned to winning ways with a 3-0 victory away to Cornard.

We were without the suspended Josh Sewell and both Craig Neal and Matty Simpson were unavailable. Luke Brown, who has re-signed for the club on loan from Histon, came into the starting line up.

Although Cornard sit ear the bottom of the table we knew it would not be an easy game. The first few minutes started at a frantic pace with lots of endeavour from both sets of players. Ely attacked from the start though and took the lead after 5 minutes. Some excellent play by Daniel Jeffrey made the goal winning the ball in his own half and playing a one two with Luke Brown down the right hand side before crossing for Alex Theobald to score from close range. Cornard were not to be down hearted conceding early and immediately pushed to get an equaliser and after 10 minutes had their best chance of the game when a striker got through on goal only to be denied by an excellent save by Harry Reynolds in the Ely goal. Ely weathered the pressure from Cornard and after 18 minutes extended their lead. A free kick from the half way line by Jamie Alsop was met in the box by Nathan Littelfair who headed past the home keeper after being left unmarked. The rest of the half was fairly scrappy although Ely did create chances to extend their lead further as Luke Brown had a long range effort well saved and Sam Goodge shot over after breaking through on the left.

The second half again was a scrappy affair with Cornard attempting to put a physical stamp on the game with a few heavy challenges going in. It was still Ely who were creating the better chances as the clock ticked down with Alex Theobald firing wide, Luke Brown shooting straight at the keeper and James Seymour shooting wide. Harry Reynolds was kept quiet with the Ely defence protecting him well. Cornard were frustrated by Ely running down the clock and were reduced to 10 men for what one of the players said to the officials. The game was finished off when Ely scored in the last minute when Alex Theobald crossed for Sam Goodge to finish.

All in all it was a professional performance by the Robins who managed to control the game and move back up to 2nd in the league. It was pleasing to keep our first away clean sheet since the beginning of September. Next up we are at home to March Town on Monday 28th December. This is a promotional game with half price entry of just £3.
