Ely travelled to Debenham without Jamie Alsop and Lewis Hook who were both unavailable due to illness. Spencer Saberton came into the starting 11 and Craig Neal (Holiday) and Joe Brannan (Injury) returned to the squad.
It was a first trip to Debenham for the majority of the young Ely squad, the oldest starting player in todays game fro Ely was 24. On a dry but bumpy pitch Ely started off well and pressed the Debenham players into their own half. In the 8th minute a ball up to James Seymour led to the Ely player being fouled. from the resulting free kick Ash Walter struck a great shot direct into the top corner of the net for his first goal of the season and not a bad one to open his account with. Debenham were trying to apply their physical approach on the young Ely side but Matty Simpson, Alex Theobald and Sam Goodge were causing problems running at the home defence. Ely came close to doubling their lead on a few occasions but could not get the final touch on the crosses or wer unable to hit the target with some of their efforts. The second goal finally came when a good moved ended in Liam Griffin playing through to Matty Simpson who finished calmly one on one. the third goal shortly followed when Alex Theobald was fouled in the box and Sam Goodge converted from the penalty spot.
The second half saw an improved Debenham side following some changes and the game was more even but neither team could get on the scoresheet. Ely hit the woodwork through Matty Simpson after Nathan Littlefair had set him up after counter attacking from his own half. Harry Reynolds had just one save to make and Josh Sewell made a good block in injury time to deny Debenham getting another shot on target.
A good three points for the Robins that were won by the performance in the first half. Next up is Cornard at the Unwin on Saturday 26th March.
