Ely recorded their 20th league win of the season and 6th on the bounce with a hard fought 2-1 win against Cornard at a windy Unwin Ground.
Ely were without the injured Sam Goodge and unavailable Nathan Littlefair but Jamie Alsop and Lewis Hook returned from illness. There was also a place in the squad for former Ipswich Town, Livingston and Lowestoft midfielder Scott Mitchell.
Weather conditions were not good for football with a strong wind blowing across the dry, bobbly pitch and this made the majority of the first half not much of a spectacle for the 81 in attendance. Ely won a number of corners but could not get a crucial touch on to any of the deliveries. The first real chance came after some good football by James Seymour and Alex Theobald resulting in the later crossing that the keeper could not hold but there was no Ely player close enough to finish. After 25 minutes a ball over the left back by Daniel Jeffrey was met by Alex Theobald whose shot went across the face of goal but wide of the far post. Cornard had their best effort of the half after 30 minutes when a shot could not be fully gathered by Harry Reynolds at the first attempt but he was able to react to save from the rebound. On 35 minutes Ely captain James Seymour sustained a nasty facial injury when he took a boot to the face and was off the pitch for a good 5 minutes receiving treatment. In the last minute of the first half Ely won another corner. Jamie Alsop swung the ball into the front post where Matty Simpson was able to finish from close range. HT 1-0
The second half started pretty much the same as the first half with neither team being able to get the better of the conditions. On 58 minutes Cornard equalised when Ely failed to clear the ball and a Cornard midfielder was able to find the top corner from 25 yards. After this Ely brought on the experienced Scott Mitchell and on 63 minutes were back in front. Ely won a free kick on the right hand side and from another excellent delivery by Jamie Alsop Ash Walter was able to lose his marker and head in from 8 yards out. Another change was made with 20 minutes to go with Lewis Hook coming on. Ely had the ball in the Cornard net again but the goal was disallowed for a foul on the keeper. Cornard were pushing for an equaliser but the Ely defence stood strong and Harry Reynolds dealt well with a couple of dangerous balls into the box. In the last 5 minutes Ely had two penalty appeals turned down. Luke Mansfield, on for the last 10 minutes, played in Lewis Hook who looked to be fouled but stayed on his feet to set up James Seymour who shot wide. Then soon after Scott Mitchell played in Lewis Hook who looked to be tripped from behind when through on goal but the referee waved away the appeals.
Full time and another valuable 3 points. On Easter Monday Ely travel to March Town.
