Ely made it a successful Easter weekend by taking maximum points from the two games that were both played in testing weather conditions.
Two changes were made to the starting line up that beat Cornard on Saturday with Nathan Littlefair returning and Lewis Hook starting in central midfield. Ash Walter was unavailable and James Seymour was not fit to start as he was still suffering from the facial injury sustained on Saturday. Josh Sewell moved up into central midfield and also took the captains armband. Paul Summerskill and Joe Brannon came into the squad.
The pitch was wet in places but not too bad considering the rain there had been over night. Ely started brightly and penned March into their own half from the kick off. After only 8 minutes Ely were in front. a free kick was won just inside the March half and Lewis Hook quickly played the ball to Jamie Alsop at left back who moved forward with the ball and delivered an excellent cross for Josh Sewell to powerfully head past the home keeper. Ely were looking in dangerous form as they continued to attack the March back four. Jamie Alsop was given too much time down the left hand side on numerous occasions and was putting some excellent balls into the box but the Ely forwards could not convert. The second goal did come on the 27th minute again from the left hand side. Jamie Alsop played it forward to Craig Neal who got past his marker and was able to pick out Matty Simpson at the back post who took a touch and then shot past the advancing keeper. Two was nearly three when Nathan Littlefair had a goal ruled out for offside and then from another Jamie Alsop deadball Nathan Littlefair hit the bar with a header.
The second half was a little more even but Ely managed the game well and always looked like the team more likely to score. The closest they cam was after 60 minutes when Liam Griffin won the ball and advanced past two defenders before squaring to Josh Sewell who struck the post with his shot from the edge of the box. Both teams made a couple of changes with Under 18s top scorer Luke Mansfield on for Ely looking to cause the March defence more problems. Ely could not find the third goal but defended well in the last 10 minutes as March went route one in search of getting back into the game.
Full time and another valuable 3 points. Seven wins on the bounce for the Robins and next up is Woodbridge at home on Saturday 2nd April.
