Ely City 5 - 2 AFC Sudbury Reserves

Martin Grey29 Apr 2016 - 14:58

A record 13th victory on the spin as Robins comeback from 2-0 down.

Ely went into this home game with AFC Sudbury reserves knowing a point would be good enough to guarantee runners up spot in the division. Daniel Jeffrey was out injured so Joe Brannan came in to replace him. Jamie Alsop was available so came in at left back. Lewis Hook started in midfield and under 18s top scorer Luke Mansfield got his first start for the first team.

Sudbury were a young side but had first team winger Jordan Blackwell in their starting line up and it was Blackwell that shocked the home side by opening the scoring after only 5 minutes. As the rain poured down the Sudbury youngsters were dealing with the conditions of a slippery playing surface better than the home side. Ely were not quite at their best and the away side doubled their lead after 28 minutes when a cross was deflected and looped over Harry Reynolds. Ely responded well to this and after 35 minutes were back in the game when Luke Mansfield played in James Seymour who rounded the keeper and slotted home. In the 44th minute Ely were level when Luke Mansfield was wiped out in the area by the Sudbury keeper, who was lucky to get just a talking to from the referee, and Alex Theobald dispatched the penalty with confidence.

Ely started the second half with a much better tempo and soon got in front when Luke Mansfield scored his second goal for the first team and a goal that his display had earned. On 60 minutes Brady Stone made 3 changes bring the under 18s off as they had a game the following night and replacing them with Spencer Saberton, Ash Walter and Craig Neal. Ely were dominating possession but Sudbury still looked dangerous on the break and their striker created a couple of chances with one flashing across the face of goal. On 80 minutes the game was wrapped up when Josh Sewell headed home. In the 90th minute Ely made it 5 when Craig Neal headed home from an excellent cross from Matty Simpson.

This was the 13th victory on the spin for this Robins side and according to the record books breaks the record of 12 victories recorded in 1997.
