Last minute penalty keeps Robins still pointless at home

A last minute penalty sent The Robins to another defeat at home after showing great character to come from behind on two occasions in the match and then take nothing from the game.

Manager Brady Stone was forced into a change at right back with Daniel Jeffrey still feeling the effects of the hip injury that forced him off on Saturday.Joe Brannan was selected to cover the role. Changes were also made with Alex Theobald getting his first start of the season after missing through injury and Dominic Hunt also getting his first start.

Walden created the first chance of the night when a Dan Grindrod volley just went pass the post and it was not long before the away side took the lead when a mistake by Ely's centre back Tom Williams gifted the ball to The Bloods captain Craig Calver and he played a square ball to the supporting Matt Snelling who drilled a low hard shot past Harry Reynolds.

Ely were working hard, but were giving silly free kicks away which stopping themselves getting into the game. Walden created another good opportunity and again it was Grindrod who was put through, but was denied by the oncoming Reynolds.

The Robins started to get into the game and keep possession better and it was during one of these spells where a moved started at the back and it found its way forward to the advancing Matty Simpson who was up ended 15 yards outside the box. Ash Walter stepped up and hit a lovely free kick over the wall and past the ex-Robins keeper Lee Pacey.

With Ely's tails up they then went close again when a Alex Theobald header just went pass the post. Saffron Walden always looked lively in the final thrid and created another couple of good chances before Ely centre back Ollie Brookes volleyed over at the other end.

The second half started with Saffron Walden coming out of the blocks quicker and it was Dan Grindrod who tested Harry Reynolds again first with a left foot shot that was well saved.

It was The Bloods captain Craig Carver who had a hand in Walden taking the lead in the 50th minute when he was initially fouled and then the resulting free kick was taken by him quickly and Dan Grindrod was the first to react and he calmly rounded Harry Reynolds and slotted home.

Unlike Saturday when the home side never really looked like getting anything out of the game when they went behind The Robins were still clearly in the match and a James Seymour shot was well saved by the advancing Pacey.. Walden always looked dangerous on the counter attack, but it was from a long Dominic Hunt throw-in that Tom Williams beat Pacey to the ball and with his header goal bound a goal line clearance by Spike Bell prevented the home side drawing level.

They did get their reward for their endeavour when in the 85th minute Matty Simpson was up ended just outside the box. As with the Walden second goal a quickly taken free kick by Jamie Alsop found George Darling who slotted up for the home side .

With the game heading for a draw it was when Ely were on the attack that they conceded the penalty in the 89th minute. George Darling was attacking centrally mid way into the Walden half and his attempted through ball to Craig Neal was cut out by Walden centre-back Perry Moody. Charlie Dicker the Walden substitute was right in between the two Robins centre backs and a Moody through ball found him one on one with Harry Reynolds. Reynolds made a great save as Dicker rounded him, but the back tracking Ollie Brookes then pushed into the back of the Walden striker to give away the penalty to the despair of the home side .Marc Abbot stepped up and although Harry Reynolds went the right way and did get something on it it was a well taken penalty that hit the back of the net.

In the main another encouraging performance, but getting points is the name of the game and that is what The Robins will be hoping for when they visit Great Yarmouth on Saturday
