The Robins welcomed The Seasiders to The Unwin ground on Saturday knowing that taking less than three points would be looked at as disappointing at the least. F.C Clacton arrived at the game with no points on the board for the ten league games they had played although recent results and performances suggest that they are starting to improve after a major upheaval during the summer.
The home side started brightly with James Seymour, Mason Newman and Kelvin Enaro all going close with efforts. The Robins in fact were guilty either trying to walk the ball into the net or their final decision on the final pass was not the right one.The Seasiders seemed as the half went on to get more men behind the ball which made it more difficult to break them down. When the visitors did break they did look fairly dangerous and had a good shout for a penalty when defender Ash Walter up ended oncoming attacker, but the referee was not having anything to do with it.
The second half started with F.C Clacton on the front foot and a deflected shot off the boot of Daniel Jeffrey just sailed over the bar The Robins seemed still to be in the dressing room and the away side started to grow in confidence . A free kick for Seasiders hit the bar and this started to wake Ely up a little bit and Ash Walter and James Seymour could not convert a chance when a bouncing ball in the six yard box would not come down in time for one of them to fire home. .
Robins winger Kelvin Enaro had looked dangerous all afternoon and his run and shot forced a decent save from the keeper who tipped his shot over. Mason Newman had a great chance after the best move of the game saw him fire wider in the six yard box Ely City's top goalscorer from last season Alex Theobald had started to get on the score- sheet in recent weeks and by his own admission this was not his best game in the red of The Robins. But while he is own the pitch he will normally convert one chance and this happened in the 80th minute when a short corner found Jamie Alsop wide and his pin point crossed found the rising Theobald to power in a header into the far corner with the keeper rooted to the spot.
George Darling had another good effort shortly afterwards, but the visitors could not really created another chance to equaliser and they came away from the game without anything after a battling performance.
The home side deserved the win in the end and gained their first three points at home of the season
