Injury time equaliser stops Robins gaining a valuable win on the road

After last weekends disappointing performance and result at home to Hadleigh it was time to go on the road all be it a short journey into Norfolk to take on 5th place Thetford Town.

The Breckenders have had a really good season and won 3-1 at The Unwin earlier in the season so this was always going to be a tough place to come and get something . The Robins went into the game with the unavailable Harry Reynolds,Jamie Alsop,Nathan Littlefair,Craig Neal, and Liam Grffin along with Matty Simpson who was ill. Brady Stone was also unavailable which left assistant Martin Grey in control of team affairs for the day.

Making his first appearance of the season was Under 18 keeper Jake Alsop and on the bench 17 year old Tom Thulborn.

The away team started very sluggishly and it looked like it was going to be a long afternoon ahead , but in the 15th minute good work by Dominic Hunt found Sam Reed at the far post and his effort just had enough pace on it to beat the unlucky home keeper.

The goal seemed to get Ely going and they stepped up their work rate, while the home side did not really threaten. Things got a lot better for the Robins when a piece of magic from Sam Reed calmly beat the keeper from distance.

Ollie Brookes was very commanding at the back while we looked dangerous on the counter attack. With five minutes to go before the break Thetford had their first real chance and their effort beat a rooted Jake Alsop, but every away supporter was pleased to see it hit the post and the danger was cleared .

The second half was always going to be more difficult for the away side and at the start Thetford did go close on a couple of occasions. They did reduce the scoreline when in the 56th minute a Thetford player was not challenged by at least four Robins players and the ball swept past a helpless Alsop between the sticks.

The goal in fact stabilised the Ely players and looked more likely to hit Thetford on the break and on one occasion Kelvin Enaro was cleaned through and instead of shooting with his left foot tried to come inside on his right and the chance had gone.

Dominic Hunt who worked tirelsly in the centre of midfield came off towards the end to be replaced by Tom Thulborn who was making his league debut.

With the game going into added time and it looking more lightly to finish up with an away win the home side mustard one last chance and took it at the far post to the dispare of all of the Ely players and fans.

All though the result felt like a lost to the players as Martin Grey commented on afterwards it was a positive sense of feeling as they worked so hard unlike last weeks defeat. The Robins go again on Tuesday evening at home to Swaffham Town
