Robins despair again at the Seaside

The Robins made the trip to the coast to meet The Bloaters who also gained promotion last season from Division One.

Without Joe Brannan and Jamie Alsop who were both unavailable along the injured trio of Daniel Jeffrey,Sam Goodge and Joe Peacock, Dominic Hunt and Spencer Saberton filled the full back roles while Brady Stone looked to slightly changed the formation and the way the side set up.

The conditions at the beginning of the game could have been better with the sea breeze picking up and rain in the air , the uneven hard surface set the game up to be scruffy and demanding on the players in terms of quality

The first half saw both sides have chances with an Alex Theobald strike for Ely and the dangerous Mitch Forbes for Yarmouth having a couple of efforts for the home side. Half time came and it was no surprise that the half drew a blank

The home side started the better of the two sides, but it was Ely who were shouting the loudest for a penalty after Alex Theobald had rounded the keeper but then went to ground and the referee awarded a goal kick stating that no contact was made.

Yarmouth did have the ball in the net as Lee Roots ghosted in at the far post, but an eagle eyed assistant referee deemed him to be in an offside position

Both sides did try an up the tempo in the second half without either deserving to really take the lead, but on 70 minutes after a Craig Neal free kick on the right was returned to him by a defender his return cross found Ash Walter unmarked in the box and his deft header glance past Puntins in the Yarmouth goal to put the away side 1-0 up..

The goal seem to drive the home side on and with six minutes to go a cross in the box found Ash Walter in his own box and as he cleared his follow through allegedly made contact with a Yarmouth player who made a big deal of it. To the surprise of most of the supporters the referee pointed to the spot and to the dismay of the Ely players.

Bloaters striker Mitch Forbes stepped up and calmly slotted past Harry Reynolds who afterwards received a yellow for dissent. This seemed to panic The Robins into trying to chase the game and although a George Darling header went over the bar the far side assistant referee had is flag up some reason they started to lose their shape .

With two minutes to go Ely again seemed to over commit and a large gap between defence and midfield enabled Yarmouth to play a through ball to the lively Forbes and although he must have been close to being given off side the flag stayed down and he coolly shot past Reynolds for the winner.

They say in football you make your own luck and that is true, but at the moment a combination of being slightly naive in seeing games out along with big decision's not going their way The Robins may start to feel sorry for themselves. You cannot question their work rate, commitment and togetherness, but must ensure that points are picked up quickly before finding themselves in a relegation battle later in the season.
