Tuesday night saw another Jekel & Hyde performance from the home side which in the end cost them dearly.
Manager Brady Stone kept the same starting eleven from the win against Stowmarket and this looked the right decision as the Robins started brightly and on the front foot.
Striker Alex Theobald looked sharp and his snapshot was the first effort of the match. Alex Brown had a long range effort that was hit straight at the keeper and with Sam Goodge becoming more influential the early signs looked good.
The away side had a great opportunity in the 16th minute but failed to convert a header from six yards out.
A Jonathan Brown effort and then a scramble in the box after a Adam Capel header back into the six yard box showed that the home side were on top but without converting any of their chances.
At time the football played in the first half was very pleasing on the eye ,.but without punishing the oppostion
If the first half was Ely's the second was most defiantly Godmanchester's and with only five minutes of the half gone they took the lead. Alex Brown had progressed forward in an attack from left back and when this broke down Josh Sewell filled in for him. A long diagonal ball to the seemed to catch out Sewell and Reynolds in goal and Jack Chandler swooped in to header past the home keeper.
Disappointingly the home players heads seemed to drop immediately and it was the away side who were on top and pushing for the second straight away. They seemed to be first to every ball and their desire was most eveident. The second goal came again from Chandler as the ball dropped to him on the edge of the box with his back to goal he chested and with an overhead kick found Reynolds off his line and the ball sailed into the net.
The home side had their first shot of the half in the 89th minute from Ash Walter but somehow the keeper saved it all be it very awkardly
Talking to Seb Pearce from the Ely Standard after the game Manager Brady Stone commented
“We played some excellent football in the first half but didn’t take our chances,” boss Stone said.
“But the second half performance was shocking. They showed more fight and wanted the points more than us.
“We couldn’t get any passing going and they came out and pressed and we hid. The first goal knocked everything out of us and I don’t know why because we played really well in the first half.”
Stone also admitted that he could be forced to shake up his squad in order to achieve more positive results.
“We have too many passengers at minute,” he said.
“We have a bigger squad now so I’m not afraid to get rid and bring in different players that want to fight.
“The mentality needs to be better. I can’t put my finger on what’s going wrong but it something needs to change.
“We have a squad full of footballers but none of them want to fight at the minute.”
Stone will hope to bounce back from their disappointing defeat this Saturday on their trip to one of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division’s strugglers – Wivenhoe Town (3pm KO).
The Essex side are currently second-from-bottom in the standings having won just one game so far this term, but Stone has warned his players to not go into the clash showing any complacency.
“It’s definitely a game I’m expecting to win but I said the same before the Swaffham game (Ely lost 2-1 on August 29).
“Wivenhoe is always a tough place to go. We went there last season, they had a player sent off but still managed to get a 1-1 draw.
“I’ll have a look at the squad but I’ll be making four or five changes because we can’t afford to slip up.”
