Ely City picked up their first win in almost a month thanks to second half goals from Nick Heap, and Tom Williams.
Kirkley captain Jack Herbert put the visitors ahead, but Robins forward Alex Theobald levelled the scores just before the break.
A lethargic opening twenty minutes from both teams was almost forgotten about when Ely’s Sam Reed came close to breaking the deadlock. Attempting to steer Craig Neal’s cross goal bound, Royals goalkeeper Adam Rix did well to keep the scores level.
The Ely defence was caught sleeping just minutes after, with Herbert towering above a crowded penalty area to head home Gary Williams’ free kick.
At the half hour mark James Seymour followed up on Reed’s effort as he tried to smash the ball home from eighteen yards, but a fantastic goal line clearance by Matthew Wilson kept Kirkley ahead.
Right before half time, Nick Heap delivered a fantastic cross towards the back post where Theobald was waiting. After beating his marker, he powered his headed effort beyond Rix to tie up the scores at the break.
Heap turned from provider to goal scorer in the 65th minute, finishing off a fantastic solo effort. Charging down the left wing, he continued towards the by-line before cutting inside leaving Royals full back Jack Jenner helpless, then he calmly beat Rix at his near post.
Centre back Tom Williams put the game to bed just ten minutes later as he nodded home the third headed goal of the afternoon. Rising high to meet Seymour’s free kick, Williams’ header found the top corner and gave the Robins all three points.
Ely travel down south this coming weekend to face Felixstowe & Walton United, before returning to the Ellgia to host Newmarket Town on Friday the 13th of October.
