Robins on the board with thumping win

Kevin Whitby5 Sep 2012 - 11:46

A TAZ Chisango double secured Ely City’s first league win of the season on Saturday.

Report from Ely Standard
Chisango, promoted to the first team after an excellent start to the season with the reserves, repaid boss Alan Alsop’s faith with two goals to kick-start Ely’s floundering start to the season.

The win, Ely’s first in five attempts, saw them move up into 16th place ahead of their trip to rock-bottom side Diss Town on Saturday.

The Robins almost made the perfect start to the match when, within the first minute, striker Richard Chadwick pounced on a poorly timed back pass to steal in on goal. Unfortunately for the home side, however, he was denied thanks to some alert work by the visitor’s goalkeeper.

Lee Pacey was kept busy early on too, as he gathered a couple of good strikes from Luke Rogers before Richard Gammon clattered the post with a shot from the edge of the area.

After a fairly even first half, Ely raised the tempo in the second period and, led by Chisango and Austen Diaper, playing from midfield, began to dominate proceedings.

The deadlock was finally broken just shy of the hour-mark as Chadwick’s shot was superbly saved by the Wivenhoe keeper but rolled into the path of Chisango, who made no mistake from close range.

Chadwick doubled the lead not long after as he found himself in the right place at the right time as an in-swinging corner fell into his path amid a gaggle of defenders, with the simple task of finishing easily managed.

The threat carried by Wivenhoe in the first round had faded badly in the second half and it was left to the Robins to mop up the points with two late goals.

The hard-working Diaper was rewarded for his industry in the 83rd minute as he struck low across goal and into the net before, with just a minute left Chisango drilled home a stunning shot from some 25 yards.

The goals were sandwiched between a consolation strike from Wivenhoe’s Mitchell Yeo, which were scant reward for their efforts in a closer game than the scoreline suggested.
